Abolish the recruitment duty for women

71 years after the establishment of the State of Israel and the IDF, it was time to cancel the duty of recruiting women for military service, and to let every young woman decide if she wanted to.

Recruitment of sweeping duty in Israel moves on the continuum between Israelof and Illusion. While the law clearly states that every citizen of the appropriate age is required to wear a uniform, in practice the law is a signal that everyone is clearly dead, but has never been issued a death certificate. And yet, in stark contrast to data and reality, the issue is at the heart of the consensus, at least for the most part. A perfect Israeli paradox.

According to military data, only 50 percent of every class member enters the recruiting office and leaves with a diploma. While service for the state is a tremendous right, it is also a necessity, and this burden is mainly borne by secular and religious Zionists, alongside the Druze and Circassian minorities. Segmentation by sex raises an even more distorted picture: religious girls are exempt from service, while their secular sisters do not get such a choice. Eliminating the recruitment obligation for women will eliminate this discrimination.

The immediate advantage of eliminating the recruitment duty for women is the IDF's removal from a civil polemic to which it is not in his best interests, and which has been trapped in the interest of political groups and dragged into puzzling districts. Among other things, the IDF's human resources department has circulated false data on the extent of religious recruitment. Private investigators were dispatched to detect girls who were suspected of lying when they stated they were religious, others were asked to answer intrusive and problematic questions at the recruiting bureau, all as part of an effort to meet non-military objectives, but he was required to achieve them.

There are of course difficulties and risks in the proposal. The military is still the entry ticket to Israelis and is leaping into the civilian world in certain areas, and there is concern that the absence of women from it will adversely affect their status and progress in society. But such a pattern of action, of allowing the young woman to choose, works successfully in religious Zionism. Young women who choose not to enlist can apply for academic studies and enter the employment market sooner. In the long term, this may increase their representation in the civilian world and facilitate them later on in the integration of career building and family life. Like her friend from the studio, the secular girl will also be considered to be enlisted, and the process of screening and summoning all open units for women will continue just as it is today. The waiver of the recruitment will only be initiated and signed by the candidate, until a reasonable amount of time that the IDF will determine before the date of arrival at the university. At the same time, the opportunity for voluntary girls to volunteer within the national service will be opened, including devices in the security system currently open to religious service girls. The move will also help with important tasks in health, education and welfare. This will guarantee true equality and freedom of choice for all young women in Israel.

The State of Israel is one of the few in the world that requires women to be overwhelmingly mobilized - alongside Sweden and North Korea - and is the only one in the world that discriminates between its citizens in this regard. Eliminating the recruitment duty for women may be a first step in rectifying the situation.
