The mayor of Valparaiso said the fire started as a result of a deliberate fire, which caught the residents preparing for Christmas. Animals have perished and the firefighters are having a hard time fighting the flames that are burning the colorful tree houses

Photo: Reuters, edited by Asaf DruryA fire that erupted in a slum in the coastal town of Valparaiso, Chile, destroyed dozens of homes on Tuesday while fire authorities find it difficult to control the blaze. According to Mayor Jorge Sharp, the fire erupted as a result of "deliberate" arson.
No injuries were reported, but residents fled their homes in the middle of Christmas Eve celebrations, some losing all their belongings and even their pets. "All Valparaiso fire services, supported by neighboring units, were deployed in the city. The fire destroyed about 50 homes," wrote the fire department on Twitter, adding that two nearby neighborhoods were evacuated.
The fire services said the fire, fueled by the high temperatures and strong winds, began in a wooded area and spread to the area of the city, known for its colorful tree houses. It is popular with tourists in the South American country.
President Sebastian Piñera has expressed regret over the fire that erupted in the city, one of the largest in the country some 100 miles from the capital, Santiago, "especially on Christmas Eve."
