(CNN) - A 9-year-old pitbull named Seamus got the gift of his life this holiday season.

After spending more than five years living in a shelter run by the Fresno Bully Rescue organization, Seamus was adopted by his family on December 21, just in time for Christmas.

“He literally got a family that fits him perfectly. It took more than five years, but it was worth the wait, ”Bridgette Booth, director of the Fresno Bully Rescue shelter told CNN.

Booth described the adoption of Seamus as nothing less than a Christmas miracle. “As Seamus has been aging, it is hard for him to withstand the weather, we really hoped he could finally be in a warm home for this winter season and escape the heat of summers. Sometimes we worried that he was with us for the rest of his life, so finding a home just in time for Christmas is a miracle in our eyes, ”he explained.

Seamus will not be easily forgotten in the California shelter where he spent more than half of his life.

He will be remembered for his love for donut holes, for taking his time on walks and for taking a new toy from the shelter's toy compartment on his way back to his kennel.

"Each and every one of our adoptions are special to us, but many of our volunteers who were present that day cried tears of happiness," Booth said.

Fresno Bully Rescue is a specific rescue organization for pit bulls whose shelter houses up to 40 dogs at all times, in addition to a larger number of canines that are in foster homes.

“If you can share a message about the history of Seamus, it is to consider adopting a pet in shelters. There are thousands of animals out there, like Seamus waiting for a home, they have been waiting for many years, ”Booth explained.

He added: “Consider adopting those that are often overlooked. Consider older dogs, or dogs with special needs. There are wonderful dogs that just need an opportunity and deserve it. ”
