The main artist of the album appears as Sunday Service Choir, a gospel collective in which West participates, who has also performed in his gospel and hip-hop events belonging to his Sunday Service project.
The album features 19 songs, including a version of "Ultralight Beam" by West, and "Balm In Gilead," a traditional gospel song.

West gave clues about the album in October, when he told Zane Lowe in an interview for Beats 1 that the production was about to launch.
“Jesus Is Born” is another move towards West evangelical rap, who began telling about his journey of faith this year. While working on “Jesus Is King,” the rapper even asked the collaborators not to have premarital sex while participating in the album.

While he used to rap widely on that subject before, it is clear that West is a changed man. But he was also criticized by fans, after he came out in support of Donald Trump in 2018 and spoke of slavery as an option.
