Speed limit: Ministry of Transport embarrasses itself with wrong photo

2019-12-26T15:23:16.952Z

With a tweet, Transport Minister Scheuer wanted to underpin his stance against a speed limit. That went wrong: his ministry used a Swiss motorway as a photo - 120 km / h applies there.

With a tweet about the speed limit, the Federal Ministry of Transport wanted to end the discussion about a maximum speed on German motorways. However, the Ministry mistakenly confused Germany with Switzerland for the Twitter photo used.

In order to emphasize its position against a speed limit, the ministry tweeted: "The Bundestag has rejected a speed limit with 498: 126 votes. Traffic in Germany should flow as well as possible - at night during free travel and at peak times, for example at Christmas. That is why we want control traffic intelligently, digitally and flexibly - without bans. " Below is the photo of a motorway, on which a road sign shows the next exit: another 1000 meters to Thalwil. This in turn is a tranquil community - in Switzerland. And there is a speed limit of 120 km / h on motorways.

The reactions on the net followed promptly. "Thank you for showing how sensible a speed limit is with the photo. This photo shows that you can travel safely at night with speed limit 120 in Switzerland. We want to finally experience this security in Germany," wrote a Twitter user , Others took it with humor: "Running in Switzerland (picture). Tempo 120. By the way, rail traffic too."

"The Bundestag has rejected a #tempo limit with 498: 126 votes. The traffic in should flow in the best possible way - at night during free travel and at peak times, e.g. on #Christmas. We therefore want to control traffic intelligently, digitally and flexibly - without bans. " BM @AndiScheuer pic.twitter.com/Te0tDQ70ZA

Although the Bundestag largely rejected the speed limit in a vote, the SPD brought the topic back onto the agenda. The subject must be discussed with the Union, said SPD chair Saskia Esken. "A speed limit on our motorways is good for climate protection, is for safety and is easy on the nerves of drivers. And that's why we'll talk about it again in the new year."

Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU), who is currently under massive criticism due to the toll affair, had previously given up talks about a speed limit. "We have far more outstanding tasks than putting this highly emotional topic over and over again in the shop window - for which there are no majorities," said the CSU politician.
