Anti-Semitism: Speeches will not suffice

Jacob Ahimeir

Now that the results of the internal elections in the Likud have become known, we no longer have time. Senior party and local businessmen are gearing up for the persuasion for March 2. So who has a head for heavyweight issues such as anti-Semitism?

As someone roaming the news sites of the world, the many anti-Semitic incidents do not go unnoticed. Most are not brought to the public's attention at all. In the US, they have become a daily occurrence. There is hardly a day in the Brooklyn district, for example, where ultra-Orthodox Jews do not suffer severe violence from street gangs. The police fall on the anti-Semites, usually young people?

And not just in New York or just in the "Jewish" Brooklyn district. As we write this, we have been exposed to another anti-Semitic incident, this time in the remote state of Vermont. There, in the middle of the night, the trunks of bare trees were pasted to proclaim hatred of Jews. The residents of the area, noteworthy, expressed disgust at the sight of this. Jews in Europe are also exposed to aggression and desecrated Jewish cemeteries.

How do we stop the phenomenon, rooted in the words of democratic, free states, whose leaders do in fact condemn the expressions of hatred? President Trump occasionally condemns these acts, but to no avail.

And maybe you can expect the international event, which will be attended by dozens of state leaders, who will arrive in Israel next month in Yad Vashem, to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp? The foreign leaders, whose names go before them from the end of the world to the very end, will associate with the male of the six million and make flamboyant speeches. Then, when they return home, they can state in their diaries that in January 2020 they left for Jerusalem and condemned anti-Semitism. And perhaps, nevertheless, upon their return to their country's House of Representatives, they will be quick to approve stricter laws to punish anti-Semitic haters and perpetrators.

One of the most prominent phenomena these days, in which anti-Semitism is deepening its hold on many groups, is its indifference to it, or its acceptance of existence. Here, too. The truth? This is sometimes considered a "boring", "diasporic" issue, and in general, occupation and treatment in other areas are of no importance for their daily lives: for example, the security of Gaza residents or the state of the health system.

But inculcating the necessity to slurp, or even detract slightly from the hatred of the Jewish people, is supposed to be of high importance, identical to the necessity of improving the state of the health system, for example. The parties ignore the phenomenon, although this issue is supposed to unite the Jewish parties represented in the Knesset. The film "Officer and Spy" is currently being screened, directed by Roman Polanski. Due to the content of this important film, the fight against anti-Semitism may also be accelerated. It is conceivable that he will achieve this goal no less than that of an international conference in Jerusalem where the hatred of the Jews will be discussed, wherever they are.
