(CNN) - Sundays are to stay home, especially this week, when a winter storm spreads through parts of the US.

More than 20 million people are under winter weather alerts in the northern, midwest and northeastern plains of the country.

Heavy snowfall and possible blizzard conditions will extend from northern Nebraska to northern Minnesota on Sunday, the National Weather Service said. Heavy snowfall of up to one foot (30 cm) in some places has already fallen across the northern plains and the north of the midwest in the last 24 hours.

Minnesota is dealing with slippery roads, so slippery that school buses slide down the tracks.

The winter storm will focus on northern Wisconsin and the upper peninsula of Michigan on Monday.

"There are likely to be severe interruptions in travel in these areas until Monday," the weather service said.

Additional snowfalls of 10 to 15 cm are expected throughout the Midwest and Northeast from Sunday to Monday. Isolated places, especially near the Great Lakes, could see up to 30 cm of additional snow.

Winter weather observation notices for parts of northern New York State, New Hampshire, Vermont and parts of Massachusetts were also said, CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam said. The weather will last until Tuesday, Van Dam said, with more freezing rain, ice and sleet.

A significant ice storm is forecast for the northeast and inland areas of New England tonight until Tuesday morning. Ice accumulation of up to 1.9 cm is forecast, but some isolated places can see up to 2.5 cm. This is likely to wreak havoc on travelers, in addition to fallen trees and power lines.

On the south side of the storm, rain is forecast for areas of the Ohio River Valley to the Gulf of Mexico. About 5 to 10 cm of heavy rainfall is forecast for areas of the Ohio River Valley, and flood alerts have been issued throughout the region.

A rain line will return to Chicago on Sunday night, the weather service said, which could also produce strong winds. In the Detroit area, there is a possibility of thunderstorms on Sunday, with up to 5 cm of rain possible for Monday, the weather service said.

"The good news is that it is not a winter storm," said Van Dam.

On Tuesday, there may be snowfall in parts of Detroit, the weather service said. Some "light snow" is also possible in Chicago on Monday, he said.

On Sunday, severe storms are also forecast for parts of the southeast, where damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are the main threats.

CNN's Haley Brink contributed to this report.
