(CNN) - Ten years ago, moviegoers still didn't know Jennifer Lawrence, Constance Wu or Chadwick Boseman as box office stars.

"The Avengers" had not yet met on the big screen, and the idea that a superhero movie was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture seemed unthinkable. We were so busy deciding between Team Edward and Team Jacob that we didn't see “The Chris Wars” on the horizon, or Netflix's transformation of a simple broadcast service into a formidable competitor of the prize season.

So, while it might be easy to dismiss the 2010s as the decade when franchises and superhero stories were the only movies that mattered, it would also be inaccurate, and for some reasons.

MIRA: The best of HBO and Netflix: the five original 2019 movies you should watch

On the one hand, the 2010 decade was the decade in which Hollywood was forced to consider some of its systematic inequalities, since the struggle to produce diverse stories; to the lack of recognition for that work; to the widespread accusations of gender discrimination, sexual harassment and aggression within the industry.

We could see this settling of accounts on the big screen, as we devour content from narrators like Ava DuVernay; Jordan Peele; Alfonso Cuaron; Greta Gerwig; Ryan Coogler; and Barry Jenkins. And you also saw it off the screen, as collectively we saw some of the powerful players in the industry begin to collapse under the weight of disturbing accusations.

However, there is also the fact that franchises and superhero stories are no longer the critical anathema they once were. From the deliveries of the "Harry Potter" and "Hunger Games" franchises, to the conclusion of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy, to the Marvel movies that set records, the last decade saw genres that were once treated as basic cement its status as opportunities for cinematographic excellence.
