American Jewry on a volcano

Ariel Kahana

The dark area of the Washington train station provided a great opportunity for the tall guy who recognized my dome. He was wearing a plaid shirt and had long curly hair. "Palestine fruit, Palestine fruit," he shouted, approaching me. I was stung and ignored alike. Fortunately for him, he continued the demonstration for only a few seconds and left.

I wandered in a skullcap in dozens of cities around the world, but it was the first time the Jewish marker put me in the danger zone, and it's clear that the incident I experienced last month is yet another undeniable incident. American Jewry is under attack.

Jews are attacked with cold weapons and firearms, with bare hands or blunt curses, in daylight or in the dark of night. They are attacked on the street, in the synagogues and on social networks. The eruption is not local or local. On the East Coast, on the West Coast and in between, Jews are in danger only because they are Jews. That was not the case in America ten years ago, but that is certainly the reality of the day. There is no point in pretending.

The even worse news is that we are only at the beginning of the wave. The bell curve of Jewish existence in exile tells a clear story: starting from the bottom, reaching the top and then crashing into the abyss with startling violence. This happened in Spain and Germany, Egypt and England, Poland and Russia, Portugal and Iraq, and so on. After the golden age comes the hatred. This is the order of events that awaits our brothers and us in the U.S. It is the Jewish fate that only Zionism has offered an alternative to.

From poverty and poverty in slums, Jewish immigrant descendants have climbed to all key positions in the US - politics, media, business, culture, technology. At this point, the past teaches, hatred is evolving. And this hatred has long conquered the US intellectual elite, spreading Popularity and bought it into politics as well - by evading the Democratic Party's leadership from clear condemnation of anti-Semitism two years ago. Those were the early signs that we were all comfortable closing their eyes.

American Jews, and we with them, hoped this time it would be different, that history would not repeat itself. But even in this belief they walk in the way of their ancestors. Even then, they thought "this time it will be different", that "after all we have contributed to the host nation it will not denounce us" and that "the lesson from the past is learned and therefore will not be repeated." Until the reality hit.

US Jews, sadly, are sitting on the volcano's mouth. The first shards of bubbling lava signal the great eruption to come. Maybe in five years, and maybe fifty, maybe in a series of shooting incidents or a wave of riots in neighborhoods, maybe in synagogues or centers. The Jewish community, maybe in educational institutions and maybe in the streets, American Jewry is in danger, it's time for us to open our eyes and draw conclusions.
