Costa Rica's efforts to protect nature and fight against climate change were awarded this 2019. The country won the highest award granted by the United Nations in environmental matters and for the same reasons Time magazine included President Carlos Alvarado among the 100 people most influential in this field. According to the Costa Rican government, both awards obey half a century of innovative policies in that area.
