The Australian authorities urged residents and tourists in a Victoria state to leave today in anticipation of the increased risk of wildfires in it.
Reuters quoted Andrew Crisp, the state's commissioner for emergency management, as saying in a press conference that expectations of high temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, strong winds and thunderstorms, and a change in the direction of wind moving across the state make tomorrow tomorrow more dangerous for the history of the fires in the state, calling on residents and tourists in the East region. Gippsland to leave no later than tomorrow morning.
The state of New South Wales is also facing severe weather conditions expected to exacerbate fires in the coming days as temperatures may rise to their peak next Tuesday.
Forest fires have destroyed hundreds of homes and more than a million hectares of land in five Australian states since last September, and have resulted in eight deaths related to those fires.
