(CNN) - On Saturday, the former US president. Barack Obama continued his tradition of sharing his annual favorite lists, starting with a summary of the books that made the year "a little brighter for me."

"This has become a fun little tradition for me, and I hope it is for you too," Obama wrote in an Instagram post. "Because while each of us has many things that keep us busy (work and family life, social and volunteer commitments), media such as literature and art can improve our daily experiences."

As in previous years, Obama's book selections are a mixture of historical nonfiction and some literary novels. It includes the Archive of lost children , which deals with the migration crisis; Sally Rooney Normal People's novel, which is being adapted for a Hulu series; and The Topeka School , which explores white male identity.
