Mark the way in academia

History has been recorded this week in both Arab society and the academic world in Israel: Prof. Hossam Haik, a world-renowned scientist, has been appointed Technion Dean of Accreditation. This is a wonderful personal achievement of Haik, but it also symbolizes the desire of Israeli Arabs to break through glass ceilings, to integrate into the centers of making and creating, and to reach the top positions. And this is a feat that also signifies the noticeable change in state institutions. It's too late to know some, too little to know others - and yet it happened.

Prof. Haik, whose name has been mentioned in recent years as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, joins hundreds of Arab scientists and researchers, whose names are leading them in the academic world: Prof. Faisal Azzaiza, Prof. Alian al-Krinaoui, Prof. Ashraf Avery, Prof. Mohammed and Ted are among the most talented , Bringing more and more to the State of Israel achievements and prestige in science, and to promote the research institutions in which they operate.

Even if their proportion as researchers in academic institutions is much smaller than their proportion in the general population, these scientists prove that if given the opportunity, Arab Israeli citizens contribute significantly to the country's achievements; And they also play an important role within, within their communities: they not only carry collective pride to Arab society, but also serve as exemplars and role models for the younger generation.

Indeed, unlike the generation of parents who experienced the establishment of the state and the years of the military government, and focused on finding sources of livelihood and maintaining a "low profile" - the younger generation is already striving to gain a higher education and integrate into Israeli society. No wonder that in every Arab town you can find hundreds of academics, doctors, lawyers, accountants and engineers, and their numbers only increase from year to year.

Arab citizens of Israel have long realized that acquiring education is a way for the king to integrate and influence, more than political representation in the Knesset or even in the government. Moreover, academic achievement for an Arab citizen seems to be a Jewish-Arab consensus at all levels and levels. No politician will come out against the advancement and achievements of an Israeli Arab scientist: Arab separatists will not deny "recognition of the Zionist establishment," and extremists on the right will not warn of "danger to the Jewish character of the state."

Prof. Haik enjoys an international reputation and has a huge impact on a prestigious institution such as the Technion. Startupist, tens of millions of shekels of budget, and team leader of dozens of workers and scholars, Haik has won dozens of prestigious awards and scholarships, including the Knights of the Order of Academics (founded by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808) and the prestigious Merri Kiri Award for Excellence He is one of the top 35 leading and promising young scientists in the world and his activities over the last decade have brought him and the Technion dozens of prestigious awards and international media exposure, and he, our own - and that can proudly say both Arabs and Jews.
