Nine people died in Jakarta (Indonesia) in floods, authorities said Wednesday after torrential rain during New Years Eve.
These are the worst floods in Jakarta since those of January 2013 which had left dozens dead.
Electricity has been cut in many parts of the Jakarta metropolitan area, which has an estimated population of 30 million. Some rail links and one of the city's airports have been closed.

A 16-year-old boy was electrocuted and three others died of hypothermia, said the head of the disaster management agency.
Among the victims was an elderly couple who found themselves trapped at home in a neighborhood where the water rose four meters after a river came out of their bed.

Another victim drowned and four others died after landslides caused by heavy rain Tuesday night in the suburbs of the capital.

"We cut the power [in many areas] to avoid further electric shocks," said an official with the public electricity company PLN, Ikhsan Asaad.
Ikhsan Asaad added that he could not give an estimate of the number of inhabitants affected by the power cuts.
13,000 people evacuated
According to the authorities, around 13,000 people have been evacuated, but this figure does not include residents of the satellite cities of Jakarta.

Images of the flooded neighborhoods show houses overgrown with water and mud, with residents sailing on inflatable boats or inner tubes.
According to the Ministry of Transport, due to the flooded runways, flights have been canceled at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, which handles commercial and military aircraft. Many of them have been transferred to Jakarta's main airport, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
Jakarta is regularly hit by floods during the rainy season in Indonesia which started at the end of November.
