Dominic Cummings, adviser to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is looking for new people for the government with an unusual job advertisement. The government needed high-skilled workers quickly to meet the challenges of leaving the EU this year, Cummings wrote on his private blog.
"Brexit requires many major changes in political strategies and the structure of decision-making," he says in his text. Above all, skills from physics, mathematics, economics, computer science and the advertising industry are in demand.
But "super talented spinners" also have a chance, according to Cummings. "We need some real jokers, artists, people who never went to university and struggled out of an awful hell hole," wrote the Johnson advisor. If you wanted to find out what the characters were up to about Russian President Vladimir Putin or how criminal gangs were exploiting loopholes in the border guards, you didn't need English graduates who could have entertained conversations at dinner parties.
Campaign strategist Cummings is considered a brilliant, but also unpredictable head behind Johnson's overwhelming success in the December general election and the Brexit vote in 2016 (read a portrait here). For a long time he has made no secret of the fact that he considers the administrative apparatus in Great Britain to be incompetent and wants to completely change it. Now he has the opportunity.
Cummings requested that applications be sent to a private googlemail address. One of the positions to be filled is that of his personal assistant. Major hardships are necessary for the job: "You will not have free evenings during the week, you will sacrifice many weekends - frankly, it will be difficult to have a boyfriend or girlfriend at all."
The reward is insights that hardly any other young person would have. But he also warned: "If you don't fit, I will dispose of you within weeks."
