France warns of travel to Iran after Qasem Soleimani is killed

2020-01-07T21:53:23.558Z

US citizens have not been able to go to Iran for a long time. France is now adding a travel warning. The Federal Foreign Office is still reluctant to do so.

France has warned its citizens against trips to Iraq and Iran. The French foreign ministry said on its website that the security situation was "extremely volatile".

Citizens who are temporarily unable to leave the country are cautioned in the message. Citizens should therefore reduce travel movements in Iran and Iraq and avoid gathering people.

The American embassy had reduced its presence in Iraq long before the Iranian general Qasem Soleimani was killed. At the embassy and consulate in Erbil, northern Iraq, normal Visa service was temporarily suspended last May. "The US government has limited opportunities to serve American citizens in Iraq in emergencies," it said at the time.

The Federal Foreign Office is still holding back on a travel warning. There is only a partial travel warning for Iraq, from which the Kurdistan-Iraq region is excluded. The situation in the country says: "The security situation in the region has become more volatile after the death of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in a US airstrike in Baghdad on January 3, 2020 and can continue to change very quickly."

There is no explicit travel warning for Iran. However, the office urges that trips to the country that are not required be postponed if possible.
