Irismar Díaz, her co-workers and other families in Fayetteville who work in a bakery near the military base, are on alert for the possibility of their loved ones being transferred.


Irismar Díaz will give birth next Monday to a girl named Andrea Valentina. However, she fears that her husband will not be present at the birth and should join the ranks of the 4,000 soldiers from the Fort Bragg base in North Carolina, who have been sent to the Middle East since tensions with Iran increased.

"I can't stand the tear," he said in an interview with Telemundo Noticias. "My husband is a military man and he knows what it costs and it is a military life, (but) we are never prepared."

It's not the only one. Other Latino families living in Fayetteville are on the alert that their loved ones may be sent to the Middle East. Such is the case of Irismar Díaz and his co-workers, who work in a bakery near the military base.

“I feel confident if I have to leave there, but leaving again would be a little painful for both of us,” said José Rodríguez, who 7 years ago was sent to Afghanistan and now, along with his wife Lily, owns the patisserie in Fayetteville .

Colonel Mike Burns, spokesman for the 42nd Airborne Division, acknowledged that the deployment of soldiers is unusual, but responds to a strategy to protect the security of the region's operations and sensitive information, such as the location and identities of the troops, As he told Business Insider.
