Trump tweets support for Iranian people in Farsi, while accepting dialogue with Rohani

Donald Trump warned Iran on Sunday against the crackdown on protests. His defense minister assured that he was nevertheless


Surprising kindness. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rohani were both ready for dialogue. The context is however explosive after the assassination on January 3 of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in Iraq by an American drone fire. Tehran responded by bombing two American bases in Iraq.

Donald Trump is ready to talk to Iran "without preconditions," Defense Minister Mark Esper said on Sunday. The United States is ready to discuss "a new path, a series of measures that would make Iran a more normal country," said the head of the Pentagon on CBS.

Iran and Qatar agreed at a meeting in Tehran on Sunday that "de-escalation" was the only way out of serious tensions in the region, said Qatar's emir Sheikh Tamim ben Hamad Al-Thani. "We agreed (...) that the only solution to (the) crisis is through de-escalation and dialogue," said the emir after meeting Hassan Rohani.

Trump calls for crackdown

"DO NOT KILL YOUR DEMONSTRANTS", he tweeted, the day after a first message urging the Tehran regime not to commit "another massacre of peaceful demonstrators". The White House tenant refers to protests that erupted in mid-November in Iran after the announcement of a sharp increase in the price of gasoline, killing more than 300 people, according to Amnesty International.

Donald Trump even tweeted in Farsi to tell the Iranian people that he stands "by his side", while protests took place on Saturday in Tehran, notably in front of the prestigious Amir Kabir University. The crowd launched slogans denouncing "the liars" and calling for the prosecution of those responsible for the destruction of the Ukrainian Boeing on Wednesday, shot down "by mistake", killing 176 people.

"We follow your demonstrations closely, and your courage inspires us," he added the American president. "There cannot be another massacre of peaceful demonstrators, nor an internet cut". "The world is watching," said the President.
