Democratic Sen. Corey Booker announced his retirement from the Democratic primaries last night. Booker, an African-American who represents New Jersey in the Senate, has often criticized the lack of racial diversity in the Democratic race on the presidential party ticket.
The 50-year-old's retirement came one day before another televised showdown between the top six primaries - all white. He has been considered a rising star in the Democratic Party for 20 years, since serving as Newark mayor, a rainbow day in New Jersey. In an e-mail he sent to his supporters, the senator explained that his campaign had run out of funds to continue running. Booker, who, unlike many in the Democratic primaries, concentrated on a love and unity campaign, insisted he was "proud of the ideas we brought to the race."
"More important are the values that we have been supporting all along - that the only way forward is by bringing people together, even when we are told that this approach cannot win," he stated.
