During the typhoon "Mangosteen" in 2018, a stone wall tree on Duddell Street in Central fell to the wind, crushing the legal monuments of Duddell Street for more than 100 years, including three gas lamps, a row of lantern-shaped Granite railings. Later, the Antiquities Office had sent personnel to inspect the historical situation, and claimed that after the Highways Department responsible for management cleared the fallen trees, inspected the historic site for damage and prepared a suitable restoration plan.

The appearance of the stone ladder remains unchanged

The reporter visited the stone ladder in early December, when the stone fence was still enclosed, and the gas lamp had been erected again, but it was sealed by a plastic bag. The reporter returned to Duddell Street on Monday (13th). The original fence on the stone ladder has been removed. It can be seen that the granite railings in the shape of lanterns have restored their old appearance. As for the three gas lamps that have been destroyed, they have also been erected again. The glass The bulb has also been repaired, and its appearance is almost the same as before.

Expert: The repair process takes a normal length of time

Former member of the ancient advisory committee, Li Haoran, also visited the Dudeli Street stone staircase earlier. He claimed that the restoration project could preserve the cultural relic value of the historic site. He explained that in addition to restoring the original appearance of gas lamps and stone fences, he also used old building materials. He said that the ancient consultation committee had disclosed that before the restoration, a conservation plan must be formulated in accordance with international standards, and the British manufacturer who had built the gas lamp that year was found to repair the broken parts.

He said that it is understood that most of the broken pieces of gas lamps can be successfully repaired and installed, but some stone railings are severely broken and cannot use the original materials. In addition, before the re-opening of the ancient consultative committee, it is necessary to discuss with the Gas Company the arrangements for re-lighting, and to negotiate with the Highways Department, which manages the lamp post, to extend the repair process.

The stone steps of Duddell Street existed from 1875 to 1889. The four "dual-bulb roche-style" gas street lights at the ends of the stone steps became the only gas street lights in Hong Kong that can provide street lighting since 1967. It is still operated by the Hong Kong and China Gas Company and was listed as a legal monument in Hong Kong in 1979.
