Cara Smith says that the lights of the Copperstone Farms crop, a medical marijuana farm, were reflected in the fog in Snowflake, Arizona, and turned the morning sky purple.

(CNN) - The light of a medical marijuana farm filled the sky over Snowflake, Arizona, with a strange purple glow on a recent morning of fog.

Cara Smith took a picture of the scene around 6:30 am Friday on his way to work at Copperstate Farms, the state’s largest medical marijuana wholesaler.

She lives about 3 km west of the farm and says she generally can't see the lights in her house.

"The purple lights are always there, but they usually don't light the sky like that," he told CNN. "It had snowed that morning and it was still very cloudy."

Snowflake is located in Navajo County, Arizona, about 280 km northeast of Phoenix and 80 km southwest of the Petrified Forest National Park.

The county posted Smith's photo on his Facebook page, which made residents talk about it.

Some people complained about light pollution, while others said it was pretty.

Copperstate Farms has 16 hectares of greenhouses, about the size of 30 soccer fields, that use a combination of red and blue lights at night to help their plants grow, according to a company spokeswoman.

The lights look purple from a distance, but it's usually nothing like this.

The raindrops in the low fog reflected the light, which caused it to spread across the sky.

The farm has 70 cannabis strains in production and another 40 in development and has been cultivating since 2017.

Monica Garrett and Alicia Wallace of CNN contributed to this story.
