Puerto Rico will receive help after the earthquakes 0:32
(CNN Spanish) - The governor of Puerto Rico, Wanda Vázquez, requested on Tuesday the Federal Emergency Management Agency of the United States (FEMA, for its acronym in English) the inclusion of more municipalities in the declaration of major disaster after the involvement of earthquakes that shake the island since January 6 of this year.
The request seeks assistance for Adjuntas, Cabo Rojo, Corozal, Jayuya, Lajas, Lares, Maricao, San Germán, San Sebastián, and Villalba.
“After the earthquakes that were recorded on the island, which greatly affected southern municipalities, surrounding towns have also reported damage and incurred expenses. That is why we request that these municipalities be included in the Declaration of Major Disaster signed by the President of the United States. The purpose is to be given the tools to respond to the situation, ”said Vázquez.
According to the Puerto Rican government statement, FEMA already has access to preliminary damage assessments in the south and southeast of the island as evidence to include the municipalities in the aid plan.
President Donald Trump signed the major disaster declaration on January 12, 2020, which provides assistance for Guánica, Guayanilla, Peñuelas, Ponce, Utuado and Yauco.
