Trump's defense team in the Senate trial: his impeachment would be a dangerous election intervention
Photo: Reuters, entries: Shaul AdamUS President Donald Trump's attorneys said Saturday that Democrats' attempt to oust him will set "a very dangerous precedent" in an election year. The head of the defense team, White House Attorney General Pat Sippolone, told senators that they would deny voters their right to voice their opinion of Trump on Nov. 3 in case they decide to convict and oust.
During only the third impeachment trial in U.S. history, Democrats argued this week that Trump should be ousted because of pressure exerted on Ukraine to intervene in elections through conducting investigations against Joe Biden, former vice president and one of the most prominent Democratic primaries.
The president's defense team tried to reverse the argument in the election against the Democrats. "With all their talk about electoral intervention, they are here to commemorate the most massive US electoral intervention ever, and we must not let that happen. It will violate our constitution, it will break our history, it will violate our commitments to the future," Saipolon said in a debate that lasted about two hours and was much shorter than those in which Democrats made their arguments.
