January was a considerably rainy and cold month. The rainfall ranged from 1.5 to 2 and even higher than average and in some areas this is the second or third rainfall in the series of measurements - according to the January summary of rainfall published today (Sunday) by Dr Amos Porat, director of climate services in the meteorological service. The cases were also high, causing flooding, which killed five people, and in some places the average rainfall for the entire rainy season has already dropped.

In summary, the largest quantities have been dropped in the northern coastal plain, the Western Galilee and the Carmel coastal area and Ramot Menashe. 330 to 400 mm or more, which is two times the average for January. Other rainfalls have fallen in southern Gush Dan and the Nitzanim area. In Mikve Israel, near Holon, 427 mm have been measured, which is three times the average, and Beit Dagan is 364 mm, which is two and a half times. In the southern regions, the rainfall was smaller, but it was still significantly above average. In the northwest of the Negev and in the Gaza Strip, 150 to 200 mm fell (close to two times the average). In the northern Negev, 50 to 100 mm have fallen, which is about twice the average per month.

In most parts of the country the accumulated rainfall from the beginning of the season exceeds the average for the corresponding period (until the end of January). In the north of the country and the coastal plain, the amount of rain so far is 130% to 170% of the average for the corresponding period and in some parts even more. Even in the Judean mountains the quantities exceed the average but at a smaller rate (110% to 130%). In a limited area between Netanya and Hadera, the cumulative quantities are close to average.

In the northern Negev, which had a considerable deficit until mid-January, rainfall in the second part of the month closed the deficit, and in some stations the quantities even slightly exceeded the average for the corresponding period. The only areas still in deficit are the Beesor region, the western Negev, and several other stations in the arid regions.

In some of the stations, the average annual volume and above has already been received, including stations on the northern coastal plain (in Bergba and Hebron the quantities are already more than 120% of the average for the entire rainy season), Carmel Coast, Ramot Menashe, some of the stations on the central and southern coastal plain and northern Hula Valley.
