This is not the first time in Milan we have been trying to deal with the problem, and there are already those who claim that it is "green sauce demagoguery"

Italian police distributed 162 fines in less than three hours yesterday to drivers who ignored a ban on driving in the city of Milan, as part of "Sunday's walk." The ban began at 10 a.m. and continued until the early evening hours to try and curb the smog problem in town.

However, many just tweeted about the move, and police distributed fines of € 164 to those who violated the regulations. Milan was crowned Europe's most polluted city in 2008 and by 12:30 yesterday, 621 people who had not complied with the ban on electric cars or the disabled were already tested. Some streets remained open, especially to allow access to Milan's San Siro Stadium.

This is not the first time cars have been banned from driving in the city, but the move is not popular with everyone. Regional advisor Rafael Katanau called it "green sauce demagoguery".

Last month, several cities in Italy, including the capital of Rome and Milan, temporarily banned diesel vehicles from driving in other areas as air pollution levels soared. Vehicle emissions are the most common source of toxic particles, called PM10s and PM 2.5s.
