It sounds like a terrible crime: a pediatric nurse is said to have poisoned babies with morphine. The suspicion against the woman can no longer be maintained. But who gave the poison to the infants at Ulm University Hospital?
Ulm (dpa) - The nurse, who was suspected of poisoning babies with morphine at the Ulm University Hospital, has been released from custody. The urgent suspicion of the crime against the woman was based on a find in her locker.
There, the investigators found a syringe in which, according to initial examinations, there was presumably also morphine in breast milk. However, further analyzes did not confirm this suspicion, as the prosecutor announced on Monday.
The arrest warrant for the woman was released on Sunday, it was said. The woman had denied the allegations. The nurse was detained last Wednesday on suspicion of attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm. She is said to have given medication to infants and thus put them at risk of death - according to the original assumption by the police, which has now not been confirmed.
In December, five infants were treated at the Ulm clinic for life-threatening acute shortness of breath. Only weeks after the emergencies, forensic medical examinations had revealed morphine poisoning as the cause. Prosecutors, State Criminal Police Office and police want to announce the status of the investigation at a press conference on Tuesday.
