The Chiefs, as well as the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball, are based and play in Kansas City, Missouri. There is a city called Kansas City, in Kansas, which borders its Missouri counterpart. However, cities are divided by a state line that cuts the Kansas City metropolitan area.

The distinction between states is important for residents of both cities and their surroundings. For years, there has been a rivalry between cities with a competition for businesses across the state border to relocate.

Half a century after winning for the first time, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 in the Super Bowl LIV.
