Argentina's Antarctic had its hottest day on Thursday since weather readings began in the area, the National Meteorological Service said. At midday, on the Esperanza base, a scientific station, the temperature reached 18.3 degrees. According to the meteorological institute, this is a record since 1961. The previous one was 17.5 degrees on March 24, 2015.

On the base of Marambio, another scientific station, the temperature reached 14.1 degrees, a record for a month of February since 1971. The previous record went back to February 24, 2013, with 13.8 degrees.
Argentina has been present for 114 years in Antarctica, where it has several scientific bases. It is a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty which entered into force in June 1961, which prohibits any militarization of the continent, reserving it "for peaceful activities only" .
