With Brexit, the European Parliament is experiencing a historic game of musical chairs. 27 new MEPs officially take office on Monday afternoon, when the plenary session opens in Strasbourg.
A sober start, without fanfare or celebration, because they simply take over some of the 74 seats left vacant by British MEPs. The remaining 46 are reserved for potential future entrants to the European Union. Of these 27 places, 5 go back to France. This new wave of entrants will primarily benefit the La République en Marche party (LREM) which will recover 2 MEPs: Ilana Cicurel and Sandro Gozi. His delegation will thus go from 21 to 23 members, which places the government party on a par with the National Rally (RN), which recovers an elected official (Jean-Lin Lacapelle) but is no longer the first French party, even if its delegation increased from 22 to 23 members.
