Oscars 2020: These stars could win at the Academy Awards

Munich / Los Angeles - In the night from Sunday to Monday (February 10th) the 92nd time the most important prize of the film industry was awarded. As every year, numerous actors , directors and filmmakers meet on the famous red carpet in Los Angeles . The jury selected a total of 24 Oscar winners . Once again this year, the venue was the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

There will be no main moderator this year either. For the second time, various stars, including Penélope Crus, Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hanks , will be on stage at the award ceremony . The main musical act this year is Billie Eilish. The Academy announced this in advance. It is also tradition that the songs that are nominated for "best song" are performed. Other musical highlights include Questlove, Eímar Noone and Janelle Monáe.

Oscars 2020: an Oscar for Obama?

Former President of the United States, Barack Obama , was probably one of the most unusual nominees this year. The documentary film “American Factory” was created with the participation of the production company “Higher Ground Productions” founded by Barack and Michelle Obama. The film describes the corporate development of a Chinese car glass manufacturer in Ohio.

One of the favorites for the popular gold boy is the mafia film " The Irishman" by director Martin Scorsese. The film about an unscrupulous mafia boss was nominated in a total of ten categories. Only another film could shine with even more nominations . So the anti-superhero film "Joker" is highly praised with a total of eleven nominations. The comic film adaptation of the director Todd Phillips was nominated in the categories of best film and director.

Oscars 2020: These are the German potential Oscar winners

This year only one German co-production "The Cave" (German title "Die Höhle") has been nominated in the "Best Documentation " category. The documentary by Syrian director Feras Fayyad (known for “The Last Men of Aleppo”) shows a team of female doctors in Syria at work in the war zone. The Germans had to back off in the pre-selection. The German film "Systemsprenger" by director Nora Fingscheidt was excluded from the nomination in the "International Feature Film" category.

Most recently, a German film was nominated for an Oscar in 2019. However, the film by director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck "Work without an author" received no award.

Oscars 2020: how the winners are chosen

The award is given by the American Academy of Motion Picture and Sciences . Since 1929, the voluntary organization has honored particularly good performances in the film industry. In the pre-selection process, each of the 800 members may submit ten suggestions for the "Best Film" category. Each member makes another five suggestions for its own category. That means directors propose other directors and actors suggest other actors. For some other categories, such as "short film" and "sound editing", a jury makes the pre-selection.

A total of 8,000 members are involved in the final election of the Oscars . Each member submits one ballot per category. The nominee with the most votes wins the Oscar . But who has the greatest chances at the Oscars 2020? We provide you with all the important information.

The most successful Oscar winners

Three films are among the most successful winners of the Oscars . “Titanic” (1997) won 11 trophies out of 14 nominations. "Ben Hur" (1959) and " The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King" also received 11 awards. While Katharine Hepburn leads the ranking with four Oscars in the female leading actresses, Daniel Day-Lewis won three times in the category "best leading actress".

Meryl Streep heads the list of nominees. She was nominated for an Oscar a total of 21 times - 17 times as "Best Actress" and four times as "Best Supporting Actress". She won the award three times.
