A US Defense Department contractor working in the Middle East has been accused of transmitting particularly sensitive national information to a foreign national with ties to the Hezbollah terrorist organization, CNN News said Wednesday evening.
An indictment was filed today against Miriam Taha Thompson, 61, of Rochester, Minnesota, in a Washington, DC court.
According to the indictment, Thompson received "sensitive national security information, which includes the names of people who help the United States," to a Lebanese citizen outside the United States.
The U.S. Department of Justice noted that the information was transmitted in the area designated "battlefield." Assistant Attorney General John Demares said, "If the information is true, it is a disgraceful act of betrayal, especially for someone who has worked with the US military.
Thompson was flown back to the United States this week and is expected to go to trial soon.
