With the Konrad shaft, Germany's first nuclear repository approved under nuclear law is currently under construction. Now another location for weak and medium radioactive waste is emerging.
Würgassen (dpa) - According to plans, a central warehouse for radioactive waste from all over Germany is to be built on the site of the former Würgassen nuclear power plant south of Höxter.
Containers with low and medium-level radioactive waste from decentralized interim storage facilities should be brought into an above-ground reinforced concrete hall. The Federal Agency for Temporary Storage (BGZ) reported on Friday in Würgassen - in the state triangle of NRW, Lower Saxony and Hesse. The planning was discussed with the Federal Environment Ministry.
In the desired "logistics center", the waste would be collected, sorted and put together in such a way that it could be taken to the Konrad repository in Salzgitter as quickly as possible, the BGZ explained. The Konrad shaft is Germany's first nuclear repository, which is currently being built under special conditions. From 2027, low and medium-level nuclear waste is to be disposed of there. For years, demonstrations against nuclear transports have been demonstrated, and the project in Salzgitter is also accompanied by protests. The anti-nuclear organization "broadcast" massively criticized the new project.
