The history of humanity has recorded an average of three pandemics every 100 years since the 16th century, according to the World Health Organization; the most recent occurred in 2009, caused by influenza. But this is the first time that a coronavirus has been responsible for spreading a new disease around the planet, says the WHO. In order to raise it to the highest level of epidemiological alert at which the COVID-19 infection is currently found, the agency based itself on a six-phase scale that measures the degree of threat of an outbreak to public health.
