German champion Maximilian Schachmann won Paris-Nice, which concluded with the Colombian Nairo Quintana's stage success on Saturday in the resort of La Colmiane (Alpes-Maritimes), a day earlier than expected due of the coronavirus pandemic.

Before the international peloton observed a break of an unknown duration, Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) offered a prestigious victory, in solo, in the 7th stage, for the only arrival at the top of the event. In the final classification, Schachmann beat the Belgian Tiesj Benoot by 18 seconds and the Colombian Sergio Higuita by 59 seconds. The Italian Vincenzo Nibali took 4th place ahead of the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot.

Schachmann, fifth German runner to register his name on the charts

The 26-year-old German had to fight to the limit to close the gap on Benoot, who attacked in the last 1,500 meters. The last stage, between Nice and La Colmiane (166.5 km), was long animated by a breakaway of six runners (De Gendt, Alaphilippe, Edet, Paret-Peintre, Bettiol, Pérez). The Belgian Thomas De Gendt took the lead at the foot of the final ascent, before the last 15 kilometers. De Gendt, with a one-minute lead, was only 3 km from the finish. Schachmann is the fifth German runner to register his name after Rolf Wolfshohl, Andreas Klöden, Jörg Jäksche and Tony Martin, the last to win in 2011.
