Coronavirus: the food industry in working order to fill the empty shelves

Purchases worthy of a month in December. In the last three days, in a period of usually sluggish consumption, large retailers have absorbed an influx and levels of purchases rarely seen. Friday, March 13, the day after the first presidential address on the coronavirus, sales of mass market consumer products have doubled compared to the average of the previous Friday, according to Nielsen. Even more impressive, those of sugar have tripled, those of toilet paper have multiplied by 3.5 and those of pasta have quintupled.

This rush to the shelves has grown with the pace of executive declarations imposing ever stronger restrictions. This Tuesday, after a long weekend of shaky shopping, the queues were long in supermarkets in major cities. With a random respect of the precautionary instructions in force, and especially of the rays often quickly emptied.
