TRIBUNE - The Bishop of Nanterre sends a message of encouragement, compassion and hope during this time of national quarantine, which also happens to be that of Lent for Christians.


The coronavirus epidemic, in its staggering violence, took us by surprise. The whole world, where technological performance and unbridled consumerism seemed to reign supreme, has one knee on the ground for an incredible story of pangolin and bats!

"We cross a mountain and we run up against a pebble," wrote Georges Bernanos. Our age is capable of seemingly limitless exploits but stumbles upon an elusive and tiny virus. This puts us before the mystery of the fragility of all human life, this fragility that we are constantly tempted to deny and which violently recalls our consciousness today as an essential reality to assume. The biblical figures of the Tower of Babel and the colossus with feet of clay have decidedly lost none of their salutary topicality.
