Annelies Wilder-Smith: "Europe must prepare for post-containment"

INTERVIEW - An infectious disease specialist at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Annelies Wilder-Smith was based in Singapore during the SARS epidemic (2003). She returned from a week-long mission in the city-state.


LE FIGARO.- Just two months after the arrival of the first patient carrying the coronavirus, the Singapore authorities have managed to contain its dissemination. How did they do it?

Annelies WILDER-SMITH.- Singapore, like Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong, has been deeply marked by the trauma of sras. As soon as the first cases of Covid-19 arrived, they mobilized their immense reserve of masks and activated the action plan developed after the 2003 epidemic. Their strategy of "containment at the source" consists in seeking actively test all suspect patients, test them systematically and strictly isolate hospital confirmed cases in negative pressure rooms until two consecutive tests turn negative.
