Dom Nault: "Knowing how to alternate lonely time and common life"

2020-03-20T20:04:47.298Z

INTERVIEW - Father abbot of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Wandrille, Jean-Charles Nault draws inspiration from cloistered community life to give advice on confinement and find meaning in this crisis.

LE FIGARO.- Cloistered, you are constantly living in a sort of "confinement": what advice, profane and spiritual, would you give to those who undergo this closed-door, sometimes in cramped apartments?

Dom Jean-Charles NAULT. -As far as possible, I would advise to practice what the monks do: a subtle balance between solitude and common life, even if our life dedicated to prayer is obviously quite different. For example, plan well for times when everyone is alone in their room (or in another room) and times for family meetings, to play together or chat, make music, watch a good movie or share a meal.

I would also recommend developing a free space and inventiveness for delicate attentions between family members. This time can be an opportunity to rediscover the desire to write to our loved ones, to keep in touch with those who are isolated, to train intellectually, or to take advantage of all cultural activities.
