Deferred Daylight Saving Doubt: The ICA Warns that Computers in the Country Could Collapse | Israel today

In the country

Minister Deri initiates an unexpected problem • According to the ICA, changing the original date involves updating thousands of servers and could lead to the collapse of the country's computer systems

Minister Deri on Sunday led an initiative to postpone the daylight saving time, which was scheduled to begin on the night between Thursday and Friday of the week, with the aim of reducing the number of residents in the streets at additional hours and in an attempt to reduce the risk of being in the public space during the Corona epidemic. Attorney General Avihai Mandelblit approved the initiative of Minister Deri.

However, this evening the government and Israel Digital Communications Authority announced that the date of transition between the hibernation period and the daylight saving time is structurally defined in the operating systems of servers, computers, communications equipment and even cell phones.

To change the date of the watch change, operating system manufacturers must produce a patch version, distribute it, and then install the update on every server, computer, and phone on government computers and many in the economy. The server update involves many working days and cannot be done until Thursday night, the time of daylight saving time starts.

Brigadier General Meir Ben Shabbat will have to decide on the deferral of daylight saving time recommended today by Interior Minister Aryeh Deri and, in principle, Attorney General Avihai Mandelblit.

The government's ICA and "Digital Israel" further noted that in a situation where some computers work in different time zones, malfunctions and disabling of complete computing arrays may occur. In addition, the absence of many private sector employees will make it difficult to make the change.

In light of this, and due to the importance of postponing the summer time due to the urgency to stay in the houses, Minister Deri turned to the head of the text, Meir Ben Shabbat, tonight to find a solution to the situation.
