Several people have been killed in recent days in Nzérékoré, a city in southern Guinea that has been plagued by residents of inter-community unrest since the disputed referendum on Sunday.

The human toll varies widely according to sources, the governor speaking of three dead, a doctor and a local opposition official reporting 15 dead, on condition of anonymity.

These figures cannot be verified immediately from independent sources.

Nzérékoré, one of the country's largest cities in neighboring Guinea's forest region of Liberia, has been the scene of clashes since a nationwide referendum wanted by the government for a new constitution was held on Sunday.

Curfew established

Residents contacted by AFP correspondents reported clashes between religious and ethnic communities, attacks and reprisals against churches and mosques.

A curfew was introduced Tuesday morning, according to Governor Mohamed Ismaël Traoré reached by phone.

After months of tension that had already claimed the lives of at least 32 civilians and a gendarme, President Alpha Condé and his government decided to hold the referendum on Sunday and to ignore opposition protests, international disapproval and to suspicions about the regularity of the electoral lists.

At least 14 people have been killed in polluting violence across the country, according to the opposition. Authorities speak of six deaths, two of which were due to an "accident" and a health problem.
