Last night the rabbi died at Shaare Zedek Hospital in the capital after falling ill in Corona. The 79-year-old rabbi was admitted to the hospital a few days ago in mild condition, but is at risk because he suffers from background illness - and tonight, his condition worsened until his doctors finally had to determine his death.

Rabbi Bakshi Doron, born in 1941, was the Spanish Chief Rabbi from 1993 to 2003. Prior to that, in 1970 he was appointed to the neighborhoods of Ramat Hanassi and Ramat Yosef in Bat Yam. In 1972, he was appointed Spanish Chief Rabbi of the city. He was also the Chief Rabbi of the city of Haifa, where he served as rabbinate for 18 years. His election in 1993 to the "Rishon LeZion" post was made with the support of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.

After retiring, the rabbi set up the Benin Master Yeshiva in Jerusalem and headed it. Over the years, the rabbi served as president of the Jerusalem Institute, was among the members of the Friends of Rambam Hospital and was a member of the Leumi Foundation.

In August 2017, he was sentenced to 12 months' probation and a fine of NIS 250,000 after being convicted, among other things, of offenses of fraudulently accepting aggravated circumstances, breach of trust and providing false certificate under the "rabbinate file". The rabbi was convicted of giving his permission to give hundreds of people in the defense establishment certification certificates to the rabbinate - even though they were not eligible. The certificates credited their owners with thousands of NIS salary benefits.

Chairman of the Shas Movement, Interior Minister Aryeh Deri, tweeted to him: "Baruch Dayan Truth. Mourning bitterly for the passing of Chief Rabbi Rishon Lezion, Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi Doron.
