The United Nations today warned that the deportation of the Saudi regime of Ethiopian migrant workers to it carries the risk of spreading Coronavirus infection and urged the kingdom to "suspend this procedure".
"Saudi Arabia is expected to move about 200,000 Ethiopian immigrants in total, and other Gulf countries, Kenya and neighboring countries, to deport Ethiopian migrants," said an internal UN memo seen by Reuters.
"The large-scale and unplanned transport of migrants makes the continuation of the virus more likely and we call for a temporary suspension of large-scale deportation," said Catherine Susie, the United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Ethiopia.
In turn, the Ethiopian Minister of Health, Lea Tadesse, said that "some of the migrants who were deported were confirmed to be infected with the Corona virus."
The British Guardian newspaper pointed out in a report last August that the Saudi regime was involved in practices inconsistent with human rights stipulated by international laws and covenants by continuing to abuse the Ethiopian workers in its prisons and the high frequency of their deportation.
