At the height of the fire, at the end of the afternoon, a hundred firefighters, about forty firefighting vehicles and a Dash water bomber, had fought the fire with an unknown origin, then fanned by a " light wind ", according to the same source. The fire was brought under control shortly before 8:30 p.m. and a surveillance device left on site for the night to prevent any possible re-ignition of the fire. No home was threatened.
The Souge camp is an army maneuvering ground. It covers a total area of more than 2,800 hectares, in the town of Martignas-sur-Jalle, 25 km west of Bordeaux. Mainly covered by a pine forest, it has already suffered several fires in the past.
