I live in the USA, can I withdraw money from my private retirement account? 4:17

(CNN) - The United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began sending stimulus checks this week, but while 80 million people can expect the money to reach their bank accounts before Wednesday, others they will have to wait longer before the cash is in their hands.

The first payments will go to those who have already filed their 2018 or 2019 tax returns and authorized the Internal Revenue Service to make a direct deposit if they were to receive a refund. Within that group, the agency will start with people with the lowest incomes. Social Security beneficiaries will also automatically receive their payments, even if they have not filed a return.

But there are tens of millions of people who do not fall into those categories. Taxpayers who have not authorized direct deposit may have to wait weeks to receive a check in the mail, although they can update their bank information using the new Treasury web portal, which will be launched this week.

Those who have not been required to file a return in the past two years may have to submit some information online before receiving payment.

However, the Treasury Department has said that by April 24, “a large majority of eligible Americans” will receive the checks, which were authorized under the $ 2.2 trillion coronavirus crisis relief plan that the Congress in March.

How do I check the status of my check?

The IRS created an online tool, called Get My Payment, that you can use to check the status of your money. It is expected to launch this week and be available on the IRS website.

You will need to enter your Social Security number, date of birth and mailing address in order to track the payment, the Treasury Department said.

Am I eligible?

Eligibility is largely based on income and excludes individuals who earn more than $ 99,000 and married (childless) couples who earn more than $ 198,000. Those who may be classified as dependents for tax purposes, like many college students, are also not eligible for payments, as are undocumented immigrants who do not have Social Security numbers.

But everyone else should get some money.

How much will i get

Individuals will receive up to $ 1,200 and couples, up to $ 2,400, plus $ 500 per child.

But payments are starting to drop for individuals with adjusted gross incomes of more than $ 75,000 and married couples who earn more than $ 150,000. The amount will be reduced by $ 5 for each additional $ 100 in adjusted gross income.

How can I get my money faster?

The IRS will first send checks to those who have bank accounts registered in the system. This may not be you if you have received a tax refund in the last two years, or if you received a refund by check by mail, rather than a direct deposit.

But the Get My Payment tool will also allow taxpayers to enter their bank account information so they can receive the money electronically instead of a physical check, which could take weeks or even months.

To do so, a taxpayer will need to submit their adjusted gross income from their most recent tax return, refund or amount due that year, as well as their bank account details.

However, taxpayers will not be able to update their bank information once payment is already scheduled for delivery, and it will not be allowed to update bank information that is already on file, the Treasury Department said.

What if I have not filed a tax return?

There are millions of low-income people who are not normally required to file tax returns, so they will need to take some action before receiving their stimulus check.

Generally, these are individuals who did not earn more than $ 12,200 last year or married couples who did not earn more than $ 24,400.

But they won't have to file a completely new form, as the IRS's previous guidance suggested. Instead, he created an online tool that asks for basic information like names, date of birth, and Social Security numbers of the person filing the return and their dependents. They will not have to provide any income information.

The new tool is "very simple, and probably much faster, than requiring non-filers to complete and submit a tax form," said Erica York, economist at the Tax Foundation.

The challenge will be making sure those people know about the tool and helping those who don't have internet access at home, he said.
