Charles Calvin, millionaire for a moment 0:30

(CNN) - When Charles Calvin went to an ATM last Saturday, he was only going to withdraw some money to pay his rent.

The New Chicago, Indiana volunteer firefighter had received an alert on his mobile phone informing him that $ 1,700 was deposited directly into his account as part of the federal stimulus package.

The 45-year-old man inserted his MetaBank card into the ATM and made a withdrawal for the maximum amount of $ 200. When he got the receipt, he saw that his account balance had a number with many zeros behind it.

Available balance: $ 8,200,000.

"What's happening in the world? This doesn't seem right, ”Calvin told CNN.

He needed another $ 800 to pay the rent anyway, so he made other withdrawals.

"It came out again," he said. "8.2 million."

Thinking that the ATM was wrong, he asked a worker at the Family Express service station if he had received a complaint about it. No, she replied, why?

Calvin showed him the receipt. The worker looked at the paper, then at Calvin, then looked at the receipt again.

Are you a millionaire? She asked him.

"I said, 'Ma'am, if I were a millionaire, do you think I would be here at a Family Express gas station taking out $ 200 for my rent?'" He said.

Calvin contacted a friend who is a police sergeant and who advised him not to spend any of that money but to contact his bank on Monday.

The MetaBank cashier he spoke to told him that the records only showed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) deposit worth $ 1,700. The bank employee explained that this was probably a failure in the ATM system.

Then Calvin asked about his account balance: it was $ 13.69.

"That sounds more like my bank account," Calvin said. “8.2 million dollars do not sound at all to my bank account. I wish it was my account! ”, He completed.

A MetaBank spokesperson informed CNN in a statement that the customer obtained an inaccurate ATM receipt from an out-of-network ATM: “The amount shown on the ATM receipt does not accurately reflect what was in account. We are sorry for the customer, but we are pleased that you have received your stimulus deposit and look forward to assisting you through this difficult time. ”

Calvin said his account is currently red because he has had to pay his bills and buy food.

“I am used to being broke, as well as everyone else. Everyone is going through a difficult time right now, ”he said. "So, you know, we just have to deal with this covid-19 situation. We are all trying to do the best we can, ”he added.

CNN has contacted the IRS for comment, but has not received a response.
