US intelligence is seriously considering the possibility that the Covid-19 virus may have accidentally escaped a Chinese laboratory rather than having appeared on a traditional live animal market, according to the official version in Beijing.

No evidence has yet been provided, but US diplomatic documents revealed by the Washington Post this week fuel suspicion of an accidental spread of the virus from the biosafety laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. This state-of-the-art P4 laboratory, the highest safety classification, reserved for installations handling pathogens for which there is no vaccine, was built with French technical assistance between 2010 and 2015.
