Coronavirus: the date of the municipal elections still uncertain

The decision to postpone the second round will not be known until May 23.


The organization of the second round of the municipal elections was one of the unspoken remarks of the presidential address last Monday. And on purpose: several scenarios circulate within the executive and the majority and no timetable has been set. "We will discuss it later, it is clearly not the priority," sweeps a minister, who is also a candidate in the municipal elections. Officially, the government defers to the scientific report on the health situation, expected for May 23.

For many, the hypothesis of a second round in June seems already excluded. "Even if the second round was sanitary possible at the end of June, the economic and social context will probably not lend itself to the organization of an electoral campaign", considers Stanislas Guerini, boss of La République en Marche. "If we are able to open schools in May, what prevents us from voting in late June?" Asks his side a heavyweight in the majority, in connection with the elect.
