What Vogl had suspected for a long time is now certain: The Oktoberfest 2020 will be canceled. Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) officially announced this yesterday. Thomas Geppert, Managing Director of the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association, says: "Bavaria will lack an important piece of happiness this year." It says in a press release. Vogl thinks the restaurateurs and hoteliers in the district are not as hard hit by the failure of the Oktoberfest as their Munich colleagues. "The Oktoberfest is an issue, but only in the single-digit percentage range," emphasizes the landlord. It is usually always a business that comes “on top”. "But you can compensate for that, especially with us outside." Because: "The Oktoberfest Italian doesn't usually sleep with us in the Altwirt or at Tegernsee." Despite isolated overnight stays, especially on the Oktoberfest weekends, the classic private Oktoberfest guest does the hotels here in the region are not full. Especially since the state capital has increased beds again. For many, the effort to travel here from Munich after a wet day is too great. After all, a simple taxi ride costs a good 100 euros. “People are already throwing their powder out at the Oktoberfest.” The target group are otherwise rather local companies that invite foreign customers to the Oktoberfest and provide them with an all-round program including shuttle service. But they are now also falling away.
Just like the main business of the branch in the district: family celebrations such as confirmations, communions, weddings. Easter also fell flat. Even meetings no longer exist. In theory, hotels could currently accommodate business travelers, says Vogl. But in practice nobody comes anymore.
Vogl therefore had to send its employees 100 percent short-time work. The situation for him and his colleagues is difficult. Sometimes you have to borrow a lot of money and pay it back later. And you don't know how things will go in the long term. In his opinion, what would help would be, for example, a uniform VAT rate of seven percent in his industry. The German Hotel and Restaurant Association also demands equal tax treatment for all dishes - regardless of the place of consumption and the type of preparation. So regardless of whether the dishes are available to take away or in classic restaurants, where 19 percent are still incurred.
Overall, Vogl is very satisfied with the work of the politicians in the corona crisis: "Hats off to the Bavarian and German leaders." Vogl is concerned about Austrian considerations about opening their borders to German tourists. Because then, in the event of a reopening, fewer guests would stay for domestic businesses.
