(CNN) - At least 46 people died in a prison riot, the representative of the National Assembly of the state of Portuguesa, Maria Beatriz Martina, confirmed to CNN on Saturday.
The riots began on Friday in an alleged escape attempt at the Los Llanos Penitentiary located in Guanare, in the state of Portuguesa.

In a tweet, the opposition lawmaker said the riots "are a clear reflection" of Venezuela's failed state.
Martina also confirmed that 70 people were injured in the attack.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Penitentiary Affairs and the Ministry of Information have not yet responded to CNN's request for comment.
