"Gigantic effort for a small result"

In the southern parts of Erdinger, Bergham, Aufhausen, Altenerding and Itzling, too, citizens reject flood protection by means of walls and dikes, but are also critical of the concept for the trenches, for which the city of Erding is responsible, not the water management office.

Bergham - The citizens' initiative "Erding near flood protection" worries not only about the high wave that a flood would bring, but also about the change in the groundwater inflow.

The BI spokesmen, Martin Reslmeier and Markus Auerweck, instead propose a more natural retention of third-order waters, said trenches. “Of course we also support flood protection. However, there are solutions with decentralized retention options that fit better into nature and the townscape. ”The BI hopes“ to get support from the water management office so that the variants we prefer that are closer to nature can be implemented, ”says the paper.

Fear of two oversized retention basins

The concept of linear flood protection is viewed extremely critically. According to BI, the districts of Bergham and Aufhausen are affected twice: on the one hand with the retention basin for the Sempt and on the other with the "two oversized retention basins" for the trenches, each with a capacity of around 20,000 cubic meters.

Altenerding would be affected in three ways with a 600-meter-long dam along the federal road B 388, the diversion of the Neuhauser Graben to the Altwasser and the walls along the Sempt.

"In Itzling, a retention basin with 70,000 cubic meters is to be built at the thermal baths," said BI. The engineering office Björnsen prepared the preliminary planning for the third order waters for the city of Erding. "This preliminary planning calls for four huge flood retention basins with dams that are about 4.5 meters high and 25 meters wide."

Dam over 500 meters long in Bergham

In Aufhausen this dam would have a length of half a kilometer. "This is not only unattractive for the townscape, but also dangerous," write the BI representatives. "If the basin is filled, there is a risk of a dam breaking and thus a flash flood that would suddenly pour over the town". The residents fear "the change in the groundwater level and thus a possible lifting of entire buildings".

The construction and maintenance of the four retention basins alone would cost 15 million euros. The land acquisition was not included here. The flood inflow from Neuhauser, Itzlinger, Aufhauser and Wiesengraben totaled nine cubic meters per second, that for the Sempt 90.

Is there another year of delay?

"This expansion is estimated at 20 million euros in the linear variant," writes BI. In proportion, this would result in much higher costs for just a tenth of the water. The conclusion of the BI: "A gigantic effort for a small result." The aim of the BI is to "find a common solution that is satisfactory for everyone involved" in dialogue with the city and water management. The current planning should not go into the planning approval process. The result would be heated debates and long legal proceedings, which would prevent flood protection for years to come.
